Man shot to death after taser fails, Winnipeg police say

A 26-year-old knife-wielding man was shot and killed by police in Winnipeg after they failed to subdue him with a Taser, officials say. Police responded to calls of a possible disturbance around 5:15 Saturday morning in the 700 block of Simcoe Street in the west part of the city.

When officers arrived, they confronted a man brandishing a knife, said police spokeswoman Const. Jacqueline Chaput. She said police requested that he put down his weapon.

"Information of course is preliminary, but it does appear he did not comply with the request, the electronic control device was deployed, that didn't work and they had to escalate to a higher level of force," Chaput said. She said the officer shot the man as a last resort. He was taken to hospital, but died later. At least two officers were being placed on administrative leave.

see your restrictions are getting people KILLED, if officers had more than one Taser available they would not have to have sgot this person.

Your comment is completely irrational.

The TNT blog and others do not control the number of tasers on hand (although we'd perhaps like to).

And it might be worth reminding you of the two incidents in recent weeks where a young man was tasered and died, and another man was shot (with a police gun) and lived.

Sorry but I believe the police have gotten themselves into this predicament on their own for the most part.

so what are the alternatives, you have such a great opportunity to change things here, with the proper focus. I'm just worried if Tasers are put away that police will just shoot and say it was justified. There has to be some sort of balance. I'm not saying arm all officers with a taser, but have enough and if there is another way or tool, then that should be considered as well. A guy being shot while holding a knife could be handled much better with talking

Where did "your restrictions" come from?

Police should be trained to NOT use deadly force in cases like these. Shoot to injure for shit sake. Not shot to kill.
