Man involved in Calgary Taser incident dies

November 3, 2008
Stephane Massinon, Calgary Herald

The man who was involved in a weekend Taser incident has died, the Calgary Herald has learned. He is being identified as Gordon Walker Bowe, 30, of Castlegar, British Columbia.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will conduct the investigation and is now awaiting results of an autopsy.

Director Clifton Purvis said the investigation to date has still not determined if the Taser made contact with the man.

On Nov. 1, Police were called to a suspicious person complaint in the 500-block of 42 St. S.E., Purvis said, which changed to a break-and-enter in progress.

One man was found in a vacant basement. "During the attempted arrest, police deployed a conducted-energy device, or Taser, on one occasion. That deployment, it's not known at this time if it was successful or not," he said Monday morning.

"The police ultimately engaged the individual in the basement of the vacant residence and, after a struggle, arrested the person. The individual, after being handcuffed, was observed to be in medical distress (and) he was transported by Emergency Medical Services personnel to an area hospital."

story keeps developing
only one probe hit him

The man city police tried to Taser over the weekend has died in hospital.

Gordon Walker Bowe, 30, from Castlegar, B.C. was rushed to hospital Saturday night, after officers tried to Taser him while arresting him.

Police were responding to calls about a suspicious man in a backyard on 42nd Street SE.

Officers chased a man and tried to Taser him. The head of the police association tells 660News the man was only hit with one barb, and as such was not actually Tasered. The man ran into a home and apparently tried to jump out what thought was a window to escape.

The man was eventually arrested, but went into medical distress.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating.
