'Excited delirium' cited as cause, but terminology is under debate

The July 26 death of Elier Carlos Rodriguez Escamilla was a result of a medical condition called "excited delirium," according to a news release by the Gwinnett medical examiner's office. It said the Taser shot was "an additional irritant" to drugs and alcohol.
The statement also said that during an autopsy investigators could find no evidence that the Taser shock caused the death. "There is no evidence that the use of the Taser played a direct role in his death beyond serving as an additional irritant that further agitated him," according to the release.
